Kindness. Khayelitsha now has its own first-class animal hospital, constructed from seven enormous shipping containers. Besides treating sickness and conducting ‘humane education workshops’, the hospital will offer free sterilisation to help control animal overpopulation in the area, estimated to be home to as many as 100 000 cats and dogs. The hospital was funded by donors and the South African Mass Animal Sterilisation Trust (www.samast.co.za ) is now fundraising to furnish and equip it.
